In the Danish Queen’s 52nd New Year’s speech on December 31, 2023, Queen Margrethe II announced that she will abdicate, leaving the throne to her son Crown Prince Frederik.
Queen Margrethe II assumed the throne herself on January 14, 1972, after the death of her father, King Frederik IX.

When Her Majesty The Queen abdicates at the Council of State on Sunday, January 14, 2024, it will be the first time in almost 900 years that this has happened in Denmark. It is therefore a truly extraordinary and historic event.
